The Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute is a world leading cancer research institute within The University of Manchester, core funded by Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the largest independent cancer research organisation in the world. We are a partner in the CRUK Centre of Excellence for Lung Cancer and are a key part of the Belfast-Manchester Movember Centre of Excellence for Prostate Cancer.
Our strong links with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust (Western Europe’s largest specialist cancer hospital with the world’s largest early phase clinical trials unit) mean we are ideally placed to maximise interactions between basic and clinical research teams and facilitate rapid translation of fundamental research findings into patient benefit. We sit at the heart of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) partnership, allowing access to human tissue through the Biobank.
Research programs span the whole spectrum of cancer research from the study of the molecular and cellular basis of cancer, to translational research and the development of therapeutics. We support investigations into a range of cancers, including melanoma, lung cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer and leukaemia.
Outstanding core facilities at the cutting edge of technology support all research activities, including access to next generation sequencing, expression array analysis, mass-spectrometry, Biological Resource Unit, histopathology, advanced imaging, flow cytometry, bioinformatics and basic laboratory services. Facilities were further strengthened in 2012 by £8.7m of investment from UKRPIF plus £1.5m from other sources, providing over £10m for the purchase of new specialised equipment.
The Institute offers a stimulating scientific environment that encourages innovative, cross-disciplinary collaboration. We have an excellent track record in the provision of comprehensive PhD training programmes for clinical fellows and postgraduate scientists alike, as well as supporting our young researchers and encouraging them to become future leaders in their field.
